1. THE ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL IN MOLDOVA NOUA
The design of the place of worship was realized in 1995 and was carried out by the company IPROTIM in Timisoara.
The basement at the height of 12.5 m was sanctified, and the Church received as dedications “The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” and “St. Varvara”, the protector of the miners.

In 2008, the works were suspended due to lack of funds. For six years no progress was made on erecting the church, but the idea of building the church was not abandoned.

In 2013, following a pilgrimage to Mount Athos, two monks, sons of the city of Moldova Noua, had the idea of bringing an icon of the Virgin Mary and boosting the construction work of the Church!

The architecture of the church is in Byzantine style with a three-tiled plan. The dimensions of the church are 40 m x 18 m.
The consecration of the church was done on August 15, 2019!

2. Roman Catholic Church of Moldova Noua, historical monument in neoclassical style, was erected in stone in the eighteenth century (1777-1778) on the site of the old wooden church existing here since 1756. The church, with the dedication of Saint John the Baptist, has suffered over time a series of damage and redevelopment due to the troubled history of the place. In 1788, during the war with the Turks, the place of worship was plundered and destroyed. In 1791, it was restored and provided with a tower.

During the revolution of 1848, the church is again destroyed, this time by the Serbian population, and rebuilt a few years later (1852-1853). This time the parish house and even the marriage, baptism and funeral records from the eighteenth century were destroyed. At the end of 1854, the Austrian state sold its mines and properties to the Austrian Privileged State Society (StEG), which also becomes the benefactor of the Roman Catholic church. In 1860, StEG gave the church 3 iron bells and a clock for the tower. During the First World War (in 1914), the bells were requisitioned, as was the case with all the churches, and melted for ammunition.

Even before World War II the church was renovated both inside and outside with the help of collections. During the war, the church suffered damage not only due to the war, but also to a powerful earthquake (in 1940). The last renovations were made in 2008 (exterior) and 2012 (interior).

3. Serbian Church in Moldova Veche

According to the written sources (XVIII century), there was an older Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to the Birth of St. John the Baptist, but with some modest dimensions, made of wood.

The present church, also dedicated to the Birth of St. John the Baptist, was built between 1853-1855 and is the most imposing place of worship, from a dimensional point of view, in the entire area (Danube Clisura), having a high tower that has five bells and a clock mechanism.

Initially the temple of the church was built. It was painted by the painter Frantz Vainhepl in the early 20th century, but has not been preserved in time. The old temple of the church was replaced by a new wooden one, the work of the sculptor Ladislav Veres. In the new one, however, they found place, however, for the old royal and diaconate doors. Around 40 old books (XVIII-XIX century) with a practical-religious character are kept in the building.

What is really fascinating about the majestic entrance of the Danube into its gorges is the feeling that the unearthly places surrounding you give. The glorious and almost lunar landscape, the water stretches, the clouds playing with the waves, all work together managing to enchant you.

The Baba Caia rock is situated in the area between Coronini and Moldova Noua and it is suggestively named “The lonely Danube Queen”. The rock, with its seven meters above the water mirror, gives the impression of an unusual turret mysteriously arisen in the middle of the riverbed.

Like in similar local odd name cases, “Baba Caia” name originates in Turkish, meaning “The Rock of the Father”. During the Turkish occupation, this rock had a crucial role: heavy chains were tied to it from Golubac Fortress and Saint Ladislau Fortress, as to prevent all boats and ships to enter or exit the gorges untaxed.

But beyond the roughness of this rock, a whole web of legends have been woven around it and are still narrated today.

One of the “Baba Caia” rock legend says that there was a big eternal fight between an old man, the god Saturn, and an old lady, the great goddess Gaia. He said that the grass should be mowed and she insisted that it must be cut with a pair of scissors. Infuriated, the old man threw her into the Danube. From the bottom of the river, the old lady pointed out of the water two fingers shaped as scissors to show him she maintains her opinion on the matter. Those two fingers turned into the Baba Caia rock.

Recently, the Moldova Noua town mayor, with EU funds, was able to add to the National Tourist Information and Promotion Centre an area of info boards and panels (after the model of the ones in Bohemian Switzerland National Park in Czech Republic) that can lead you to discover the tourist attractions in the area, Baba Caia rock included.

Attila, the leader of the Huns, known in the religious texts as “The whip of God” represents a mythological figure. He would have managed to lead an entire Empire stretched from Ural Mountains to the Rhine River, Baltic Sea and reached south of the Danube River. Some historians believe him to be a native of the Volga River area, so his name might be related to an old Turkish name of the Volga River, “Atil”. Others believe his name might mean “universal leader” in Turkic language, or even “father”, similar to the Gothic, Hungarian, Turkish or some Slavic languages term.

He’s a controversial historical character. It seems that he plundered two times the Balkan area and ravaged the northern provinces of Italy. Fortunately he did not conquer neither Rome nor Constantinople. Pope Leon claimed that he met Attila and convinced him not to attack Rome and in seeing the Pope, he had a vision of Saint Peter himself. This encounter inspired him to build the first thermal baths after the roman model.

“The meeting between Pope Leon the I st and Attila” – Rafael

After 300 marriages, he decided to marry one more time, taking as his new spouse the legendary Ildiko (Hilda), a beautiful blonde girl whose parents he slaughtered in Galia. The day after the big feast he was found dead.

However, in the Moldova Noua area, there are local legends who talk about the final resting place of the legendary Attila. In this area took shape a mound which is believed to be the real grave of the Huns leader. The story says that each of Attila’s soldiers brought as offering a full helmet of earth to put over their leader’s body. Attila’s army being so numerous, soon a mound erected. Near it, a ditch formed. The locals call it “Boruga”, which means “narrow passway”.

Another connected narrative is the one about Attila’s black stallion which could be handled by no one else. When Attila’s son tried to mount it, the horse ran away. The soldiers’ searches were in vain. The horse was nowhere to be found. Eventually a lot of the mares that the soldiers were riding disappeared along with the famous stallion. Apparently, the devoted horse remained to guard his master’s grave on the Moldova Veche island.

The legend about the wild horses is though a story for another occasion.

The cave is located in Locvei Mountains, 3 kilometers away from Moldova Nouă town.

On a river stone paved road, used since roman times, hidden behind a mountain, you can spot the entrance to the “Grota Haiducilor” cave (which means “Brigands’ Grotto”). It has 2 main galleries: one along the river that crosses the cave and the other, “Sala Mare” (“The Big Hall”), on top of the first one. It seems this is not a very old cave since the stalactites and stalagmites found inside are still forming.

The legend says that Adam Duca, also called Adam Neamțu (Adam The German) for wearing german clothes, was a teacher in a village along the Danube river. Fed up with the poverty and suffering around him, he started stealing from the rich. Along with his brigands, he robbed the rich and shared his loot with the poor from the nearby villages. It is said that who received money from the brigand, could not call himself poor anymore.

The search party caught Adam Duca while he was seeing his sweetheart and imprisoned him for 20 years.

When he got out of prison, the brigand asked the help of a boyar, who was once a poor man and became rich thanks to Adam’s help. The landlord refused to help the brigand, so Adam Duca took his revenge and burn the boyar alive.

The brigand got caught again and this time sentenced to death by hanging. It is said that all this took place around the year 1400 and that some of the treasures remained unshared, still hidden in the cave. In 1977, a group of german tourists found a treasure here, believed to be Adam Duma’s treasure.

The tourists who came in 2016 through the „Eco Turismul o Șansă” project enjoyed the Adam Duma brigand’s legend from the ”Grota Haiducilor” cave. The cave remains at this date very little explored, about 10%.
